The Illinois Commerce Commission (ICC) yesterday approved nearly $1 million from the state's Grade Crossing Protection Fund for safety upgrades at three BNSF Railway grade crossings in Carroll and Ogle counties.

BNSF will install new automatic flashing light signals and gates at the Oakville Road, Brookeville and Ogle Road and West Oregon Trail Road crossings. All work must be completed by Aug. 5, 2027, ICC officials said in a press release.

The GCPF will cover 95% of all project costs, not to exceed $993,328. Remaining signal design and installation costs, as well as future operating and maintenance expenses, will be paid by BNSF.
