BNSF Railway in 2025 operated its 32,500-mile network with its lowest ever employee injury frequency rate, 10% lower than its previous record year in 2023, the Class I announced yesterday.
BNSF also had a 13% decrease in rail equipment incidents, surpassing the railroad’s target for 2025, company officials said in a press release. BNSF employs 35,000 people.
The safety milestone reflects "strong collaboration between labor and management, and a shared belief that safety is a value and guides every decision we make," said BNSF Vice President of Safety Chad Sundem.
BNSF's safety policy states that every accident or injury is preventable. According to the railroad, BNSF:
• continuously examines the effectiveness of safety process and performance; • equips a workspace with resources and tools so that all known hazards will be eliminated or safeguarded;• promotes work practices and training for all employees so that safety is essential in all tasks, and;• empowers the team to be responsible for their own safety, that of fellow employees and the communities the railroad serves.
