BNSF Railway Co. last week announced on social media that its new Salt Lake City intermodal service is up and running.

The service enables BNSF customers to move intermodal freight from California to Salt Lake City. The Class I's first double-stack train bound for Salt Lake City left California on July 23.

BNSF launched the service the week after resolving a trackage rights dispute with Union Pacific Railroad. Earlier this month, BNSF asked the Surface Transportation Board to immediately act to prevent UP from blocking BNSF's trackage rights over UP lines in California, Nevada and Utah.

In the petition, BNSF said it wants to use the lines to move double-stack intermodal trains for interchange with the Salt Lake Garfield & Western Railway (SLGW) in Salt Lake City. BNSF stated in the petition that it obtained the trackage rights as a condition imposed by the board on its approval of the merger of UP and Southern Pacific Rail Corp. in 1996.

But last week, the STB dropped BNSF's request for an emergency ruling because the two Class Is had reached an agreement on the matter.
