Amtrak yesterday unveiled the first new Airo train to showcase the latest generation of new trains that will serve the national passenger-rail network.
At an event held in Washington, D.C., Amtrak President Roger Harris and Board Member Steve Bradbury were joined by Federal Railroad Administration Administrator David Fink and Siemens Mobility CEO Tobias Bauer to view the Airo, which is designed to improve the passenger experience and train reliability.
The first Airo trainsets are slated to enter service on the Amtrak Cascades route, serving the Pacific Northwest corridor between Seattle; Portland, Oregon; Vancouver, British Columbia; and Eugene, Oregon. All eight Amtrak Cascades trainsets are expected to finish manufacturing in 2026, according to an Amtrak press release.
Siemens Mobility is manufacturing the Airo trains at the company's plant in Sacramento, California.
Later this year, production and testing will be completed on Airo trainsets designed for Amtrak's Northeast Regional route. Revenue service on those trains is slated to begin in 2027. An additional 83 Airo trainsets are planned for deployment across routes nationwide in the coming years.
The Airo fleet is part of Amtrak's train and service modernization effort.
