Construction of the Portal North Bridge, a project in Amtrak’s Gateway Program, is 25% completed, Amtrak officials announced in a project update video.
The fixed-span structure will replace the century-old Portal Bridge, a moveable swing-span that has created rail traffic bottlenecks along the Northeast Corridor (NEC.)
The project is being built in partnership with New Jersey Transit and has a target completion of late 2027. The Gateway Program is designed to allow increased train speeds and expanded capacity along the NEC.
