Amtrak and CN have reached an agreement to perform track improvements necessary to prevent future summer stoppages of Amtrak's Adirondack Line service.

Earlier this week, Amtrak suspended the service, which runs through upstate New York and across the U.S.-Canadian border to Montreal. CN is planning a six-week project to repair about 30 miles of track that the trains use north of the border.

The repairs are expected to help increase future service reliability, said U.S. Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-N.Y.) in a press release.

"This result will allow tourism to flourish through the summer months, strengthening economic development in the region and our partnership with our Canadian neighbors," Stefanik said.

Last summer, speed restrictions were placed on the Amtrak trains using CN tracks when temperatures rose above 86 degrees F, which led to the service’s suspension during the height of the summer season.
