Amtrak wrapping up Penn Station's summer repair project

New York City's Penn Station will resume regular train schedules on Sept. 5, Amtrak announced today.

The national intercity passenger railroad's two-month infrastructure renewal program at the station is wrapping up. Amtrak engineering crews have completed nearly seven of the eight weeks of work, Amtrak officials said in a press release.

"We thank customers for their patience while we renew the infrastructure at New York Penn Station. We also appreciate the collaboration and support of our commuter partners, New Jersey Transit and the Long Island Rail Road," said Amtrak co-Chief Executive Officer Wick Moorman. "Our engineering forces are making great progress and we look forward to resuming scheduled operations Sept. 5."

This summer's project focused on "A interlocking," the critical sorting mechanism routing trains that enter and exit the station from the Hudson River Tunnel and MTA Long Island Rail Road's (LIRR) West Side Yard to the station tracks and platforms.

The A interlocking work included total track and switch replacement to improve train service reliability.

Amtrak, NJ Transit and LIRR agreed to modify schedules during the two-month period so that renewal work to address aging infrastructure could be accelerated. Additional work will last through June 2018, with most of it occurring on weekends, Amtrak officials said.
