Get a fresh look at freight rail electrification in light of ongoing achievements in battery technology, the advent of the “smart grid”, and growing interest in using railroad right-of-way for routing high voltage lines. The webcast panel will discuss how these developments are changing the economic argument for electrification by lowering potential capital costs and providing new potential revenue streams to railroads.

In this interactive panel, Dr. Chris Rahn from Penn State University, who oversaw the conversion of Norfolk Southern’s NS999 from diesel to battery power, will discuss using electricity as motive power.

Rocky Mountain Institute Electricity Manager Chris Nelder, principal author of the new eLab report Electric Vehicle Charging as a Distributed Energy Resource, will discuss ways in which controlling electric vehicle charging can provide valuable services to the grid, and to society in general.

Additionally, former Federal Energy Regulatory Commission Chairman and current counsel to the electric transmission industry trade group WIRES James Hoecker will talk about the transmission industry’s interest in vetted right-of-way which could be provided by railroads.
