Updates from AECOM, Ansaldo, Kelso, Axion, Hanson and MagneMotion


• AECOM Technology Corp. has obtained a $38.8 million contract to design the airport segment of the Honolulu Rail Transit project, according to a press release. The company is working with the Honolulu Authority for Rapid Transportation, the city and county of Honolulu, and Hawaii State Department of Transportation to oversee the design-build contracts for the rail system’s first two segments, in addition to the final design for the airport segment. AECOM will design a 5.2-mile portion of the elevated rail guideway from Aloha Stadium to the Middle Street Transit Center in Kalihi.

• Ansaldo STS has obtained two contracts, valued at $133.6 million, in Turkey and the United Arab Emirates, according to a company press release. In Turkey, Ansaldo has obtained contracts from Italo-Turkish joint venture Salini-GCF-Kolin to install signaling, automation and telecommunications systems for high-speed rail track between Ankara and Istanbul. In addition, Ansaldo will install Hyundai-Rotem signaling systems on 80 locomotives that Turkish state rail operator TCDD plans to purchase from the Korean supplier. In the United Arab Emirates, Ansaldo obtained a contract from the Italo-Indian joint venture created by Saipem-Tecnimont-Dodsal for the system integration of the newly built Shah-Habshan-Ruwais line on the Etihad Rail network.

• Kelso Technologies Inc.’s external pressure relief valves and Kelso Klincher™ manway system have been specified by several hazardous materials customers for installation on new rail tank cars scheduled to be built in 2012. The transactions are valued at $3 million, Kelso officials said in a prepared statement. Numerous customers that transport hazardous commodities are conducting engineering assessments of the valves and manway system, they said.

• Axion International and Coll Materials announced an increase in production capabilities with the dedication of a second production line at Coll Materials’ plant in Waco, Texas. The additional line provides Coll the capacity to produce 200,000 ECOTRAX™ rail ties for Axion per year. The production line is expected to be operational in the second quarter, Axion officials said in a prepared statement.
 
• Hanson Professional Services Inc. recently provided Phase 2 design engineering services for Union Pacific Railroad as part of the Chicago Region Environmental and Transportation Efficiency (CREATE) program. Hanson designed the Beltway 2 segment, a 3.5-mile portion of the CREATE program’s new beltway infrastructure. Hanson designed a new third mainline and a railroad bridge over Addison Creek, as well as a skewed through-plate girder flyover on a curved alignment from the Indiana Harbor Belt Railroad Co.’s mainline to UP’s westbound mainline. The flyover crosses the UP mainline and connects with the new third mainline and with UP’s Proviso Yard in Northlake, Ill.

• MagneMotion Inc. recently reached a milestone in the second phase of a cooperative agreement with the Federal Transit Administration when it delivered 75 meters of its Maglev technology, known as M3, to the campus of Old Dominion University (ODU), the site of its outdoor test facility, according to a press release. In the first phase, MagneMotion developed incremental improvements to its Maglev solution and built and tested a 50-meter indoor test track at its headquarters in Devens, Mass. The outdoor track at ODU will enable the MagneMotion/ODU Team to test M3 in all weather conditions and at higher speeds, MagneMotion officials said.
