Wabtec Corp. and Kazakhstan Temir Zholy (KTZ) signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) for 150 FLXdriveTM battery-electric shunters and modernization work to transform the mainline fleet into NextFuelTM liquid natural gas-powered (LNG) locomotives. The FLXdrive shunters will be 100% battery powered with more than 1.5 megawatt-hours of energy. To support KTZ’s mainline fleet sustainability efforts, Wabtec will provide NextFuel kits to convert the traditional diesel locomotives to LNG. Wabtec and KTZ also will collaborate on digital solutions for the fleet.

Belden, a global supplier of network infrastructure solutions, has partnered with Cylus, a rail cybersecurity company, to enable customers that use Belden’s firewall to supplement it with an optimized version of CylusOne software. The combination offers an enhanced cybersecurity platform for rail operators of rolling stock and signaling systems, the companies said in a joint press release.

The Railway Engineering-Maintenance Suppliers Association (REMSA) has announced the recipients of this year’s undergraduate scholarships: Sean McKee received the $6,000 Chairman’s Scholarship and Grace Bastyr received the $4,000 individual Scholarship. McKee is a student at the University of Missouri and his scholarship application sponsor was Ballast Tools. Bastyr is studying at the University of Alabama and her scholarship application sponsor was Progressive Railroading.
