The Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) has issued a temporary waiver allowing movements of 10-car blocks of crude oil and up to 20 empty rail cars over excepted Farmrail Corp. track between Sayre and Elk City, Okla., Farmrail System Inc. officials said in a news item posted on the company’s web site.
The provision will facilitate work trains that are delivering materials for a federally funded track rehabilitation project that’s expected to get under way next month, they said.
The Oklahoma Department of Transportation (ODOT) received a $6.75 million Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery III grant to rehabilitate 49 miles of state-owned track between Elk City and Sayre. The project calls for upgrading the track to FRA Class II standards to transport crude oil and gas to markets faster, accommodate train speeds up to 25 mph and place fewer restrictions on the number of cars per train.
Farmrail System operates the 49-mile line for ODOT. Improved track conditions will accommodate growing volumes of Anadarko Basin crude oil and lift limitations on moving hazardous commodities from truck-to-rail transloading sites in Sayre, according to Farmrail.
