Cargill announced last week its investment of $18 million to upgrade a grain facility on Union Pacific Railroad's line in Gibbon, Nebraska.

Once completed, the expansion will add 2 million of upright grain storage space and increase unload capacity of 65,000 bushels per hour, Cargill officials said in a press release.

"The facility is on the Union Pacific mainline rail, connecting our growers to export markets in the U.S. Gulf, Pacific Northwest, and Mexico, and helping to meet the needs of key end user customers in California," said Jim Reiff, Northwest commercial leader for Cargill's agricultural supply chain in North America.

The facility has eight employees who handle corn, soybeans and wheat. Improvements are being made in phases, with the project scheduled for completion by early 2019.

The Gibbon location is one of 16 facilities that Cargill operates in Nebraska, where it employs 3,800.
