The Regional Transportation District-Denver since June has been using virtual reality (VR) technology to train transit police officers.
Developed by Axon, the VR program helps officers learn how to assess different situations or threats they may face on the job by allowing them to hear and see a simulated environment that exercises their decision making and Taser skills, RTD officials said in a press release.
The technology helps officers practice technical skills and decision-making without the use of live rounds of Tasers, making training safer. Additionally, the technology is portable and quicker to complete than live training, making it more cost-effective, they said.
Rather than attending eight to 10 live deployment trainings that take entire shifts per year, officers can complete about 1,000 regularly scheduled virtual trainings that take 10-20 minutes each, RTD officials said. To complete a module, officers must score over 80%.
Nearly half of the 100 officers in the RTD police department have completed the training so far, according to RTD.
