Earlier this week, Trinity Railway Express (TRE) closed the Galvez Avenue grade crossing in Fort Worth, Texas, as a safety precaution in response to multiple accidents at the location.
TRE decided to close the crossing following a Jan. 28 collision — the fourth to occur there — in which a car was on the track while the gates were down. With the train horn sounding, the car was hit by the braking train. No injuries were reported, TRE officials said in a prepared statement.
“Illegal crossings of Galvez Avenue by motorists trying to beat trains by going through or around the crossing gates, and not heeding warning lights and train horns, have caused four collisions in the past 10 years that resulted in vehicle damage or injuries, and one fatality,” TRE officials said. “During the same period, TRE has experienced only one collision each at eight other crossing locations and no collisions at the majority of the 29 total crossings along TRE’s 34-mile corridor.”
The railroad installed barricades and concrete barriers to prevent motorists from crossing the tracks at Galvez Avenue.
