Simmons Machine Tool Corp. offers a line of automated measurement systems that inspect wheel-set dimensions throughout the maintenance process — both integrated into the company's wheel shop equipment and in standalone machines. Previous evaluation methods could be inconsistent, and had an increased opportunity for human error, Simmons officials said. And with that important data dictating what maintenance processes are required, the more accurate the measurement data, the better.
Automated measurement practices are more precise, with repeatability ensuring high quality, consistent data. Accurate measurement data provides a better understanding of the wheel set's condition, and can help discover and prevent component failure. In addition, the measurement data is digitally archived and can be accessed and analyzed in the future, allowing for a better grasp of wheel-set component trends, and can influence more effective predictive maintenance strategies.
