• L.B. Foster Co. announced it has begun delivering 28,500 tons of 115-pound standard continuous-welded rail (CWR) to New England Central Railroad (NECR), which is upgrading about 140 miles of track in Vermont. L.B. Foster will use CWR trains to complete 18 shipments of welded rail by mid-2011 for installation at various locations. The rail will be manufactured in 240-foot lengths and welded into 1,600-foot strings by L.B. Foster partner Steel Dynamics Inc. at its Columbia City, Ind., facility. The new rail will help improve train speed for Vermont-sponsored Amtrak Vermonter service and add capacity for freight carloads, according to L.B. Foster.
• Siemens Mobility obtained an order for six Vectron locomotives from German locomotive leasing firm Railpool — Siemens’ first order for the newly developed Vectron generation, according to the company. Deliveries are scheduled to begin in mid-2012. Designed to reach a top speed of 124 mph, the locomotives will be used to haul freight and transport passengers in Germany and Austria. Bombardier Transportation also received a locomotive order from Railpool, a $157 million contract for 36 TRAXX locomotives. Delivery is scheduled to begin in July 2011 and conclude in November 2013.
• Parsons Brinckerhoff has appointed Oliver Hoehne senior engineering manager in the Newark, N.J., office. He has 18 years of experience in systems engineering and systems integration, including 13 years involved in rail and transit projects. Hoehne previously was a project engineering manager for Siemens Transportation Systems, where he participated in a large MTA New York City Transit capital project.
• Harsco Corp. announced that Vice Chairman Geoffrey Butler plans to retire at year’s end. He joined the company in 1993 through the acquisition of MultiServ International N.V. and later became group chief executive officer of both the Harsco Metals and Harsco Infrastructure businesses, and president of Harsco. He was appointed to the company’s board in January 2002.
