U.S. freight-rail traffic surged for another week this month, with railroads posting 499,217 carloads and intermodal units in the week ending Oct. 7, up 3% compared with the same week in 2022, according to Association of American Railroads data.
U.S. railroads logged 233,768 carloads, a 3.6% increase, and 265,449 containers and trailers, a 2.5% gain.
Seven of the 10 carload commodity groups that AAR tracks weekly posted increases. They included motor vehicles and parts, up 18.9%; petroleum and petroleum products, 15%; and grain, 6.4%.
Two commodity groups posted decreases: miscellaneous carloads, -4.8; and farm products excluding grain and food, -0.7%. Forest products traffic posted flat results.
Meanwhile, Canadian railroads logged 96,488 carloads for the week, a 2.6% increase, and 72,277 intermodal units, an 11.8% decrease. Mexican railroads reported 16,381 carloads for the week, down 10.2%, and 11,901 intermodal units, down 15.4%.
For the first 40 weeks of 2023 compared with the 2022:• U.S. railroads reported 18,603,381 carloads and intermodal units, down 4.1%;• Canadian railroads posted 6,344,008 carloads, containers and trailers, down 3.4%; and• Mexican railroads logged 1,118,795 carloads, containers and trailers, up 3.4%.
