U.S. Class I worker count climbs in July, STB data shows

The U.S. Class I workforce continued to grow last month. As of mid-July, the Class Is employed 153,046 people, up 1 percent compared with June’s level and 1.8 percent vs. July 2009’s count, according to Surface Transportation Board (STB) data.
Professional and administrative staff, which totaled 13,999, posted the largest month-over-month gain at 4.6 percent. The workforce segment also increased 1.1 percent on a year-over-year basis.
The only segment that registered a month-over-month decline was the maintenance of equipment and stores workforce, which inched down 0.1 percent to 28,039. The segment also fell 1.2 percent from July 2009’s level.
Meanwhile, transportation (train and engine) workers in mid-July numbered 60,448, up 1.3 percent from June’s level and 6.4 percent from July 2009’s count. The transportation (other than T&E) workforce inched up 0.4 percent from June’s level to 6,542 and was relatively flat vs. the year-ago period.
The number of executives, officials and staff assistants climbed 0.5 percent to 9,020 on a month-over-month basis, but declined 3.8 percent on a year-over-year basis. The maintenance-of-way and structures workforce expanded slightly (by 0.1 percent) from June’s mark to 34,998 and contracted 1.2 percent from July 2009’s level.
