Reagan funeral procession spurs record-high D.C. ridership

As people flocked to Washington, D.C., yesterday to pay their respects to former President Ronald Reagan, Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) posted its highest-ever one-day ridership — 850,636 passengers.

The previous record of 811,257 passengers was set on Jan. 20, 1993, when former President Bill Clinton was inaugurated.

Typical spring weekday ridership averages between 670,000 and 690,000. Several streets were closed yesterday during the funeral procession along Constitution Avenue, so city officials encouraged commuters and visitors to use the WMATA system. The authority operated peak service between 1 p.m. and 7 p.m.
