The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) yesterday opened the 2022 application period for state rail-freight grant programs.
The state will accept applications for the Rail Transportation Assistance and the Rail Freight Assistance programs through Sept. 2. RTAP is a capital budget grant program funded by bonds, while RFAP is underwritten through the state’s multimodal fund.
"Pennsylvania's rail-freight network is critical — it keeps goods moving and supports the economy," said PennDOT Secretary Yassmin Gramian in a press release.
In 2021, PennDOT awarded $33 million in grants to 25 freight-rail projects. At 65, Pennsylvania has more operating railroads than any other state, and it's one of the top states in total track mileage at more than 5,600 miles.
