League of Railway Industry Women names UP's Valdez 'Woman of the Year'

The League of Railway Industry Women (LRIW) has named Union Pacific Railroad Director of Public Affairs Lupe Valdez as the recipient of the organization's 2009 "Outstanding Woman of the Year Award." Sponsored by Progressive Railroading, the award recognizes an individual's dedication, commitment and contribution to the rail industry.

Valdez joined UP in 2005 as director of public affairs. She serves the Los Angeles Basin, where her responsibilities include working with local politicians and community groups, and addressing air quality issues.

Prior to joining UP, Valdez served the Southern California Regional Rail Authority (Metrolink) in various capacities and was deputy executive officer for the South Coast Air Quality Management District. She also held various positions at the Los Angeles County Transportation Commission and Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority after beginning her professional career at the Southern California Rapid Transit District.

While serving the various transportation agencies, Valdez helped develop environmental impact reports for future rail lines and was involved in light-rail and subway construction projects in L.A.

Valdez will be honored during the LRIW's 12th annual luncheon, which will be held Sept. 18 at the Chicago Hilton & Towers as part of the Railway Supply Institute’s annual conference.
