FTA green lights $700 million grant for DART expansion

The Federal Transit Administration has approved a $700 million Full Funding Grant Agreement for Dallas Area Rapid Transit’s (DART) $2.4 billion light-rail expansion.

If approved by the U.S. transportation secretary after a 60-day congressional review, the grant will enable DART to begin constructing two lines. A southeast extension will link downtown Dallas, Fair Park, South Dallas and Pleasant Grove, and a northwest extension will serve the Dallas medical and market centers, Dallas Love Field Airport, Farmers Branch and Carrollton.

As part of a larger plan to double its light-rail system to 90 miles by 2013, DART will construct another branch to serve Las Colinas Urban Center in North Irving and Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport. The agency also plans to extend service from Garland to Rowlett.
