Caltrain on Feb. 10 will launch Caltrain Mobile, a ticketing app that enables riders to purchase and activate tickets from smartphones.

Caltrain Mobile will offer one-way and day pass tickets, as well as zone-upgrade tickets for adults and passengers who qualify for discounted fares.

The app runs on iOS and Android systems. It also will feature a tool to link with the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency's (SFMTA) MuniMobile ticketing app and the Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority's (VTA) EZFare app.

Digital tickets purchased through the app include several security and authenticity features, such as changing background colors and animation, Caltrain officials said in a press release.

Caltrain Mobile was designed by moovel North America LLC, which also developed the mobile ticketing apps for SFMTA and VTA. In January 2017, Caltrain's board selected moovel North to develop the app.
