FRA awards $25 million for GPS-based PTC equipment on Pacific Surfliner

The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) has received $25 million from the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) to install global positioning system-based positive train control (PTC) equipment on the Pacific Surfliner intercity rail line.

The equipment will help improve worker safety, and prevent train collisions and derailments, Caltrans officials said in a prepared statement. The state will provide a dollar-for-dollar funding match with 2009 Proposition 1A rail bond funds, which will increase the project’s funding to $50 million.

The equipment will be installed on the Pacific Surfliner corridor in San Diego County. The North County Transit District, operator of the Coaster service, will install the PTC system on tracks between San Onofre and San Diego, where the Surfliner and Coaster service share a line.

“Caltrans is committed to safety not only on our highways, but also on our three intercity rail lines,” said Acting Caltrans Director Malcom Dougherty.
