Whiting Product of the Week: Drop Tables

In response to increasing rail maintenance shop output, the rail industry has been moving to install new drop tables and modernize existing Whiting drop tables which enjoy a history of long life. Whiting engineering is utilizing the latest in computer technology to optimize design and manufacturing with one of the most robust drop tables in the industry, in terms of cycle times and shop dependability.

Whiting drop tables have become the standard equipment in some of North America’s most productive rail maintenance shops due to their reliability and shop efficiency. This unique equipment is located under the rails in the repair shop and its purpose is to lift the locomotive or rail car, support the equipment and lower the full truck assembly or a single axle.

The reliable Whiting drop table consists of a motorized carriage that traverses between the service top and the release top. The typical drop table has four (4) columns attached to the carriage. Resting on the lifting nuts inside the columns are lifting brackets that rise upward until they make contact with the bottom of the service top. The service top is then lifted slightly, to allow the release of the locking bars. The service top is then lowered down enabling it to traverse to the release track and rise to the top where the old truck is removed. After, new trucks are put back on the service top and the reverse procedure can begin.

Although Whiting manufactures overhead cranes and portable electric jacks for safe and efficient lifts, Whiting drop tables provide the optimum reach and stability offering numerous benefits such as reduced operating cost in comparison to other lifting methods. Customer testimonials have reported years of uninterrupted service as long as with proper maintenance is performed.

For years the Railroad Industry has counted on Whiting Corporation to supply them with solutions to their various equipment lifting problems.
