Tiefenbach Grade Crossing Protection System

Tiefenbach has over 30 years experience in design and manufacture of fail-safe axle counting systems for use throughout the world. Experience has proven the Tiefenbach fail-safe grade crossing control system to be ideal for track circuits with poor ballast conditions, shunting sensitivity problems, rusty rail, RF interference issues and similar problems.

The Tiefenbach grade crossing system utilizes a hardware based axle counting design to provide a functionally equivalent “virtual track circuit.” No microprocessor or similar software is used. Any axles counted into the system by a movement across an approach sensor will activate the external XR-relay or flasher control unit until which time the axle count is restored to zero by a movement across an exiting island sensor. The system provides a normally-closed relay contact output which can be interfaced to any XR-relay or flasher controller.

The axle counting logic ensures high reliability and is unaffected by complex movements of on-track equipment, including push-pull shunting, equipment stop or change of direction, and similar operations.

The standard system is designed using three overlapping axle counter circuits with four wheel sensors mounted at specific counting points along the rail for detecting the presence of on-track equipment. The wheel sensors are monitored for an open or short circuit condition or any displacement from the rail. In the event of any such failure, the system will enter a failsafe mode and open the contact line to the XR-relay or flasher controller.

An axle-counter crossing system with integrated flasher rack designed to directly control flashers, bells and gates is also available upon request.

Tiefenbach systems offer extremely high reliability, which translates into lower maintenance costs.
