Transportation Services Index increased in November

The Transportation Services Index (TSI) in November climbed 1.2 percent from October's level to 111.2, according to the U.S. Department of Transportation's Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS). The index also inched up 0.6 percent compared with November 2011's mark.

The Freight TSI in November rose 1.7 percent from October's level to 108.9. The index — a measure of output from for-hire rail, trucking, inland waterway and air freight firms — increased in part because of recovery efforts associated with Hurricane Sandy, which depressed freight-rail and truck traffic in October, BTS officials said in a prepared statement.

"Both rail freight and trucking showed large increases in November," they said.

On a year-over-year basis, the Freight TSI essentially was flat.

The Passenger TSI in November nudged up 0.1 percent from October's level to 117.6. The measure of air, local transit and intercity rail service output also rose 2 percent versus November 2011.
