Calgary to launch service on West LRT line next month

Officials in Calgary, Alberta, are making final preparations for the Dec. 10 service launch of the West Light-Rail Transit (LRT) alignment, which will serve communities in southwest Calgary.

Started in 2009, the project included six new stations along more than five miles of track, major roadway upgrades, construction of a new interchange, and a revamped pedestrian and cycling network, Calgary Transit officials said in a prepared statement.

"We anticipate that come Dec. 10, more than 30,000 people will choose to ride the new LRT," said Calgary Transit General Manager of Transportation Mac Logan.

Constructing all aspects of the project simultaneously resulted in the project's completion in three years, Logan said.

"To put this schedule into perspective, it usually takes two years to extend an existing LRT line to just one new station," he said.
