Wilbur Smith Associates to study Connecticut commuter rail plan

Connecticut Department of Transportation recently awarded Wilbur Smith Associates a contract to develop an implementation plan for the proposed New Haven-Hartford-Springfield commuter rail service, which is designed to provide commuters an alternative to congested Interstate 91.



The 62-mile route, which runs alongside I-91, is owned and maintained by Amtrak. Adding new commuter service to the existing freight- and passenger-rail traffic might require building new track, signals and stations, and improving bridges and viaducts, grade crossings, and parking facilities at existing stations.



The planned service would include an intermodal transfer to the New Britain-Hartford Bus Rapid Transit service. A link to Bradley International Airport also is being considered.



The study is scheduled to be completed in July.
