BART offers special passes as alternative to holiday driving

Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) is encouraging people not to drive to and from New Year’s festivities by again offering its "New Year’s Eve Flash Passes".

BART plans in mid-December to begin selling the $5 passes, which entitle the bearer to unlimited rides from 6 p.m. Dec. 31 to 3 a.m. Jan. 1. Passengers only need to show the special passe — which won’t fit in BART’s fare gates — to a BART station agent.

The agency began the program two years ago, offering them as a turn-of-the-century pass and souvenir. This year’s 15,000 memento passes will be available on BART’s Web site, www.bart.gov, at Lake Merritt Station’s Customer Services Center and ticket booths at Embarcadero, Montgomery and Powell Street stations, and through some "Tickets-To-Go" vendors.
