TriMet has named Inessa Vitko chief operations officer and promoted Mary Hill to executive director of transportation.

The appointments are part of the Portland, Oregon, transit agency's focus on fiscal efficiency, TriMet officials said in a press release. During the summer, TriMet officials focused on reducing costs amid a growing budget gap. Adjustments to the highest level of management are an important part of that effort, said TriMet General Manager Sam Desue Jr..

Vitko joined TriMet in 2006 as a training services administrator. She left TriMet temporarily for a position at the Clark County Public Transit Benefit Area Authority (C-TRAN) before returning to serve as executive director of transportation.

Hill began her career at TriMet in 2003 as a bus operator, held a position at C-TRAN and returned to TriMet as senior director of operations command center and rail operations.

As part of the cost-cutting, Desue eliminated the agency's chief operating officer role, which has been vacant since May. Vitko's position as chief operations officer is different, with a more intense focus on day-to-day operations, TriMet officials said.
