New Orleans Regional Transit Authority (NORTA) CEO Alex Wiggins will retire effective Dec. 31, the agency announced last week.

Wiggins joined NORTA in July 2019 as the first publicly appointed CEO since the agency was formed in 1979. Prior to joining the agency, Wiggins was chief of security at the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority, which he joined in August 2015.

Wiggins joined NORTA at a "pivotal time" in the agency's history, leading the organization as it brought administration, operations and maintenance functions in-house, said NORTA Chairman Mark Raymond Jr.

Wiggins also led NORTA through its first major route overhaul since interim service was introduced after Hurricane Katrina occurred in 2005, he said.

"Together, these achievements allowed the agency to better prioritize local rider needs, regional connections and transit equity," added Raymond.

Lona Edwards Hankins will serve as interim CEO until the NORTA Board permanently fills the role. Hankins has served as the deputy CEO of planning and infrastructure since December 2019.
