Not even two weeks since reopening renovated Kitchener-Waterloo and Brantford stations, VIA Rail Canada May 22 opened the Moncton station, following the completion of a $1 million project to upgrade and modernize the downtown facility.
"With this revitalized station, Moncton is very much a part of a national renaissance of passenger rail," said Canada Transport Minister David Collenette in a prepared statement.
Last October, VIA completed the first phase of the station’s renovation, which included consolidating its telephone sales operations in an adjacent building. Phase Two, which began in November, included integrating that building with the existing station and modernizing passenger facilities.
The now-fully accessible station’s improvements include a modern air-conditioning system, an expanded and renovated waiting room, new ticket counters, and mechanized baggage handling. Restrooms also have been modernized and expanded, including the construction of a dedicated facility for people with disabilities.
Upgrades to the exterior include a central tower and bold signage, and improved entrances and exits to improve passenger flow.
