Tri-Rail ridership exceeded 4 million passengers in 2012, surpassing the mark for the first time since 2008, the South Florida Regional Transportation Authority (SFRTA) announced yesterday.
SFRTA officials attributed the near-record ridership to south Florida's improving economy and high gasoline prices.
Tri-Rail operates 50 trains daily, Monday through Friday, and 16 trains daily on Saturdays, Sunday and holidays. The railroad plans to begin offering hourly service on weekends starting in March, up from the current schedule of two-hour headways, SFRTA officials said.
Tri-Rail services 17 stations in Broward, Miami-Dade and Palm Beach counties.
