Tri-County Commuter Rail Authority (Tri-Rail) Aug. 24 awarded Tri-County Rail Constructors a $231.6 million design/build contract for Segment 5 of the railroad’s double-tracking project.

Tri-County Rail Constructors comprises Herzog Contracting Corp., a unit of Herzog Transit Services Inc. that operates Tri-Rail’s trains; Tampa-based builder Granite Construction; and The Washington Group, a construction management company.

The commuter railroad for several years has been adding a second track to its 72-mile corridor, completing eight-mile Segment 1 in spring 1997. Segment 5 involves the addition of 46 track miles; construction, demolition or renovation of several stations; signaling systems upgrades; building of new bridges and rehabilitation of existing ones at 13 locations; civil works; utility relocation; landscaping; improved grade crossing and traffic control systems; and installation of an enhanced passenger information system.

Upon Segment 5’s completion, expected in March 2005, Tri-Rail anticipates running trains at 20-minutes headways during rush hour along the corridor it shares with CSX Transportation freight trains and Amtrak passenger service.
