TriMet to close downtown Portland MAX station

TriMet on Aug. 24 will permanently shutter the Skidmore Fountain Metropolitan Area Express (MAX) Station in order to speed up the MAX light-rail Blue and Red lines through downtown Portland, Oregon.

TriMet's board voted last year to close the station, TriMet officials said in a press release.

Currently, MAX trains stop at three stations spaced closely together along 1st Avenue in downtown Portland. As a result, trains move more slowly along the route.  Closing the Skidmore Fountain station and eliminating a stop, commuters will save time as MAX trains travel directly between the Old Town/Chinatown and Oak St/SW 1st Avenue stations.

Skidmore Fountain is the last of four stations on the MAX Blue and Red lines that in 2018 were first proposed to be closed. The other three closures occurred in 2020, saving riders a minute and a half each trip. Closing Skidmore Fountain station will save riders another 45 seconds.
