Silver Line extension to Dulles advances with Loudoun County vote

The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority’s (WMATA) proposed Silver Line extension to Dulles International Airport took a major step forward Tuesday, when Virginia’s Loudoun County Board voted to commit financial support to the project.

The board’s vote appeared to be the project’s latest, and possibly last, political hurdle to overcome, according to a July 3 report in the Washington Post.

“The Dulles extension of the Metrorail system will support growing transportation demands, putting Loudoun County and Washington Dulles International Airport on the Metro map,” said WMATA Chairwoman Catherine Hudgins in a prepared statement.

The Loudoun County Board’s vote will enable the line’s extension to proceed, she added.

“For more than three decades, we have witnessed the incredible benefits that come with having Metro in our communities, from serving as a catalyst for economic development and smart growth, to improved mobility and reduced congestion,” she said.

The project will connect by rail some of Virginia’s northern suburbs to Washington, D.C., for the first time. Loudoun County will commit about $270 million to the project, according to the newspaper.
