With no state funding commitment in place to close a massive budget deficit, the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA) will begin on Aug. 24 cutting service across the transit system.
The service reductions will be followed by a base transit fare increase to $2.90 on Sept. 1. Fares will jump 21.5% on Sept. 2 for riders of SEPTA's Regional Rail commuter system, according to a SEPTA press release.
State lawmakers are still in the budget approval process, meaning the necessary funding to close a $213 million SEPTA budget deficit has not been approved — or denied — yet. If the funding is approved, SEPTA will work to reverse the service cuts, SEPTA officials said.
Without a solution, SEPTA will need to implement further service cuts on Jan. 1, 2026, that would eliminate five Regional Rail lines, add a 9 p.m. curfew to all rail services, and eliminate 18 additional bus lines. This would be an overall 45% reduction in current services.
