The Metropolitan Transportation Authority yesterday logged its billionth rider in 2025 on the New York City Transit (NYCT) subway, three weeks earlier than in 2024.
The milestone follows strong ridership in September on the subway system, during which NYCT recorded 13 consecutive weekdays with over 4 million riders each day. The week of Sept. 8 also set a seven-day post-pandemic ridership record with a combined 26.8 million passengers, MTA officials said in a press release.
This year is the fourth consecutive year that the billionth rider milestone has been reached earlier than the prior year. NYCT also logged 85% on-time performance in September, maintaining from 85.1% in August.
Also, the number of crimes committed on the subway system was 31% lower in September 2025 than it was in September 2024, MTA officials said.
"Fast, frequent, more accessible service is a powerful incentive, not to mention [New York Gov. Kathy Hochul's] investments in safety, which, over the past year, have improved riders' sense of safety and overall customer satisfaction," said MTA Chair and CEO Janno Lieber at a press conference.
