The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority's Orange Line trains are now operating at 55 mph in select segments.

The speed increase will impact stations between Oak Grove and Assembly Station, MBTA officials said Aug. 24 in a press release. The previous maximum speed was only 40 mph due to track infrastructure issues that have now been remedied.

This is the first documented time the Orange Line as reached 55 mph. The speed restrictions on those segments have now been removed as part of the 2023-2024 track improvement program, which removed more than 220 speed restrictions and replaced 250,000 feet of rail across the MBTA system.

"In 2024 we eliminated speed restrictions and restored maximum allowable speed for the entire Orange Line and now are ready to further shorten trip times giving our riders back even more precious time,” said MBTA General Manager and CEO Phillip Eng.
