The Texas Transit Association (TTA) recently honored Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) President and Executive Director Gary Thomas with the Outstanding Public Transportation General Manager Award. The award was presented at the 2009 Texas Transit Conference held in Austin last week.
The award recognizes a public transportation manager who's made outstanding contributions to the industry. Thomas — who's led DART since 2001 — helped the agency secure a $700 million Full Funding Grant Agreement from the Federal Transit Administration for a light-rail expansion project; launch construction on the Green Line, the first step in DART's program to double its current light-rail system; and manage one of the most aggressive light-rail expansion programs in North America, according to TTA.
