Columbia Tap Trail reopens near METRO line in Houston

The Columbia Tap Trail, a four-mile hiking-and-biking path that was closed earlier this year to accommodate construction of the Southeast Line of the Metropolitan Transit Authority of Harris County, Texas, (METRO) expanded light-rail system, has reopened.
While the trail was closed, METRO and the city of Houston upgraded it by adding an irrigation system, sod and plantings. Trees will be installed along the path in 2012, METRO officials said in a prepared statement.
The Columbia Tap Trail is a “rails-to-trails” conversion project consisting of four miles of a 10-foot wide, concrete hiking-and-biking trail along the old Columbia Tap railroad. The trail winds through Houston’s historic Third Ward.
The Southeast light-rail line is under construction and expected to open in 2012.
