Capital Metro proposes fare hikes to offset higher operating costs

Austin’s Capital Metro is proposing a fare increase that would standardize MetroRail and MetroExpress fares and eliminate free fares.
The fare hike is part of a long-range “financial sustainability” plan designed to help the agency mitigate the rising costs of providing service, Capital Metro officials said in a prepared statement.
Capital Metro’s board will vote on the proposed fare hikes at a Nov. 10 meeting. If approved, they would take effect on Jan. 16, 2011.
