Later this month, freight trains moving through downtown Kinston, N.C., will travel at higher speeds, reducing delays at grade crossings, according to the North Carolina Railroad Co. (NCRR).

During the past several months, the railroad improved the track realignment and clearance in the area by straightening a track section. Now, trains will operate at speeds up to 30 mph instead of 10 mph through downtown, according to NCRR, which owns and manages a 317-mile corridor between Morehead City and Charlotte.

The track realignment was completed in partnership with Norfolk Southern Railway, which performed the work and will be responsible for operations and maintenance. NCRR funded the project on the line, which is used by three to five freight trains per day.
 
Today, NCRR and Operation Lifesaver North Carolina plan to conduct a safety blitz in Kinston to educate motorists about the train speed increase and crossing safety.
