WMATA to expand eight-car train operations on Red, Green lines

Today, the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) is adding 20 rail cars to is fleet.
The cars will be used to convert three Red Line and three Green Line trains from six cars to eight, and establish a "gap" train that will be available when another train has service problems. The additional service will help support ridership during Washington, D.C.'s summer tourist season.
The additional vehicles will bring the total number of cars in service to 850 — the most in the authority's 33-year history. The agency recently upgraded power substations and completed delivery of all 184 of its 6000 series rail cars, enabling WMATA to add more eight-car trains throughout its system.
