It’s taken her almost 500 days, but Anna finally broke through the excavation wall at Citytunneln’s Malmö C station this week, completing her 2.8-mile journey. Anna the tunnel boring machine, that is.

Anna began her trip in November 2006, making two Christmas stops and several maintenance stops along the way. Her sister machine, Katrin, currently is about 1,640 feet from Malmö C and is expected to break through in about a month.

The tunnel is being built as part of the Swedish railway’s $1.6 billion project to build a 10.5-mile railway between Malmö Central Station with the Öresund Bridge, and connecting to the Scania railway network. Scheduled to be complete in 2011, the project also calls for expanding Malmö Central Station to include an underground section.
