USDOT awards nearly $200 million to PANYNJ for Sandy cleanup

Maintenance Of Way
The U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) awarded the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey (PANYNJ) $195.7 million for Hurricane Sandy-related infrastructure repairs, Sens. Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) and Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.) announced Sunday.

Of those funds, $141.5 million is being allocated to the Port Authority Trans-Hudson Corp. (PATH), and $53.2 million to the World Trade Center Transportation hub to repair damage caused by Hurricane Sandy, which struck the East Coast in late October 2012.

Storm damage resulted in $2 billion worth of repairs to return PANYNJ's  airports, rail system, bridges and tunnels to service, according to a press release issued by the senators' offices.

"This $200 million will help resume and accelerate progress on getting the PATH trains up and running at full steam, and will help to make sure other projects aren't' stalled while the cleanup from Sandy continues," said Schumer.

"The devastation caused by Superstorm Sandy to our city's mass transit and infrastructure is unprecedented," Gillibrand said.
