Rail News: Mechanical
Yesterday, RailPower Technologies Corp. announced it will receive funding under a California emissions reduction program to produce a Green Goat™ and Green Kid™ hybrid switching locomotive.
The 1,000-horsepower Green Kid will be used by Railserve Inc.; RailPower is finalizing an agreement with the 2,000-horsepower Green Goat's end user. Both switchers would be used in the state's South Coast Air Quality Management District.
Featuring 130-horsepower diesel generators and long-life recyclable batteries, Green Goats and Kids are designed to reduce NOx and other emissions 50 percent to 80 percent, and fuel use about 50 percent compared with a conventional switcher.
"Our hybrid locomotives can make a real impact in state and federal strategies to reduce harmful emissions," said RailPower President and Chief Executive Officer Jim Maier in a prepared statement. "For the railroads and yard operators, [the benefits are] radically reduced diesel fuel consumption, maintenance costs and noise levels, and significantly improved availability."
California's incentive-based emission reduction program is designed to promote new environmental technologies to help the state achieve certain clean air goals.
