Nashville & Eastern Railroad kicks tires on GenSet switcher

Another short line has wrapped up a successful test of National Railway Equipment Co.'s N-ViroMotive™ GenSet locomotive.

The Nashville & Eastern Railroad (NERR) tested the locomotive for 16 days last month in switching operations and found the N-ViroMotive cut fuel usage close to 50 percent compared with a conventional switcher.

The GenSet locomotive features three microprocessor-controlled modular engine-generator sets that can operate alone or in tandem. Previously tested by Pacific Harbor Line Inc., Tacoma Rail, Providence & Worcester Railroad Co., Dallas, Garland & Northeastern Railroad Inc. and other railroads, N-ViroMotives are designed to reduce air emissions from 50 percent to 80 percent, and cut fuel usage between 35 percent and 50 percent compared with a conventional switcher.

Formed in 1986, the Nashville and Eastern Railroad operates 110 miles of track in central Tennessee.
