The cars were added to the existing fleet on the Red Line, the system's busiest route. Additional trains will continue to be added as CTA replaces all of its 35-year-old 2400- and 2600-series cars now in service.
"The cars are a big part of our efforts to modernize the CTA and bring the system into the 21st century," said President Forrest Claypool.
CTA eventually plans to receive 706 5000-series cars at a total cost of $1 billion.
The 5000-series cars are designed to provide smoother acceleration and braking, and feature an aisle-facing seating configuration that adds space to the narrowest part of the aisle to provide more room for riders with backpacks, packages, bicycles and strollers.
